I finished the second book in the Luxe series, by Anna Godbersen. If you didn't get a chance to read my review of the first book, Luxe, you can check it out here.
As I mentioned in that review, these books are classifed as young adult stories, but don't let that turn you off. I think the reasoning behind that is because many of the characters are young adults, but the story lines are not juvenile.
This second novel took me a little longer to get into, but once I was several chapters in, I was just as invested as I was in the first one. Again, I really enjoyed learning about what life was like for socialites in 1899, and how formal everything was. There was even more backstabbing in this one that in the first novel. The story continues to focus on the struggle the characters have between what they want and what they are obligated to do - mainly who they want to love, and who they should marry. One of the smaller characters in the first novel becomes a bigger player in this one and I am becoming attached to her story. I like parts of her character, but she does some things I can't stand, too.
My favorite character from the first book was not as big a player in this one (though she was more so towards the end), and I was worried when I couldn't get into this book at first that I wouldn't like it because it wasn't about her as much. However, once I began to feel more connected to the other characters in the book, I liked it. And she does come back in the later chapters.
The conclusion of this book has more of a "leave you hanging" feel than the first one did. I am excited to read the 3rd, but I know I have three other books that came in at the library for me....and somehow I need to read all three of those in two weeks before they're due (which most likely won't happen!) It never fails that I end up with several books at once and have trouble reading them all.
Would I reccommend it to others? Most definitely - I'm not a historical fiction lover, but I sure do love these books!
